Why charities move off WordPress

WordPress is good software, and it runs a huge share of the web. The trouble for a small charity is not WordPress itself but everything around it: the theme, the plugins, the hosting and the person who set it all up.

Each plugin is someone else’s code, updated on someone else’s timetable. Skip the updates and the site is a target. Run them and something may break. Either way, someone on your team now looks after a web server, whether they meant to or not.

Then there is the login. Often one admin account, shared by email, belonging to a volunteer who left two years ago. And the forms, which email a personal inbox and never become a record of who got in touch.

A typical WordPress set-up vs Good Eggs

Both give you pages you can edit. Only one needs looking after.

WordPress, as charities usually have it
  • A theme, a page builder and a plugin for forms, events and spam, each to keep updated
  • Hosting, backups and the security certificate bought and checked separately
  • One admin login, shared around, with no record of who changed what
  • Form answers in an inbox or a spreadsheet, apart from the CRM
Good Eggs
  • Nothing to install or update: pages, forms, events and news are built in
  • Hosting, your domain and the padlock sorted for you
  • Everyone invited with their own login and role, and an audit log
  • Every form creates the person’s record, with their consent

What you’ll actually notice

  • No update nags

There are no plugins or themes to keep current, so there is no update button to forget about and nothing for it to break.

  • Logins you can trust

Each person has their own sign-in. Anyone who can see people’s records also uses an authenticator app.

  • Forms that land somewhere

Referrals and volunteer sign-ups arrive in one inbox and turn into a record, not a forwarded email.

  • Changes you can undo

Work on a draft, preview it and publish. Earlier versions of a page are kept if you need one back.

How moving across works

You do not have to rebuild anything yourself. Tell us your current address and we bring your pages across, in your colours and with your words.

We set up redirects from your old page addresses to the new ones, so links people have saved and search results keep working.

  1. 1

    We talk

What you do, who you help, and what your current site has on it.

  2. 2

    We bring your pages across

Your words and photos, rebuilt from ready-made blocks you can edit.

  3. 3

    You check it over

Preview every page and change anything you like before it goes live.

  4. 4

    Your domain switches

Your web address, with the padlock, and redirects from the old pages.

  5. 5

    You retire the old site

No hosting, plugins or admin login left to look after.

Questions about moving off WordPress

Do we lose our Google ranking?

We redirect your old page addresses to the new ones, and the site has a sitemap and a description for each page from day one, so search engines can follow the move.

Can we keep our web address?

Yes. We connect your existing domain and set up the security certificate for you.

What about the plugins we rely on?

Forms, events, news, FAQs, galleries, a team page and a directory of local services are built in. Tell us what else your plugins do and we will say honestly whether it is covered.

Is it more secure?

There is no plugin or theme code of your own to patch. Staff sign in with their own accounts and roles, anyone who can see records uses two-step sign-in, forms limit how often they can be sent, and an audit log shows who changed what.

Can we get our data out later?

Yes. You can download a person’s full record, your donations list and your funder reports as files whenever you need them.

Do we need a developer?

No. Your team edits pages, forms, events and branding in a browser, and we are a message away.

Ready to stop patching?

Send us your current web address and we will show you what your site would look like on Good Eggs.
